Your Dad's Flare Corduroy Jeans Are A Thing Again

You could argue that the fashion industry is running out of ideas. In the last few years, we’ve revisited almost every decade in recent history, from 90's normcore to 80's maximalism, and now, we’re back on corduroy, the quintessential fabric of the 70s. But who is really surprised? The 70's had their renaissance just a few years ago, brought back into the spotlight with classic shapes and silhouettes, featuring in runway collections such as Chloe, Saint Laurent and Roberto Cavalli. However, majority of the collections back then were sans corduroy, with the ribbed fabric avoiding much of the attention, so it wasn’t going to be long before fashion realised it forgot something.

Despite corduroy taking the backseat for a while, it was rarely if ever in the realm of uncool. Plenty of my friends have described the thrill of unearthing an amazing vintage corduroy piece at their local flea market, and thanked strangers for compliments before telling them their corduroy jacket is a vintage designer piece from a thrift store in London.

All that aside, corduroy is the perfect transeasonal material, and a fresh answer to denim. Don’t be limited to that quintessential chestnut brown shade we all think of when we picture corduroy - the fabric is back in every shade imaginable, from baby blue, to canary yellow, and lavender. So experiment with colour, play with the fabric and have fun with its revival. One tip? Make sure you get your corduroy in the right fit, and the rest will take care of itself.
