Your Coat Called, It Wants You To Have Fun This Winter

It wouldn’t be autumn without a copious amount of articles talking about how to find that perfect staple coat for the season ahead.

There’s plenty of advice that favours buying basic pieces in classic colours, and while I have nothing against that quintessential camel trench, sometimes you need something extra to get through a cold and wet winter day. So, I’m advocating for getting a statement coat into your wardrobe this year - everyone needs an obnoxiously optimistic, fluffy, fuschia coat staring back at them from their closet at least once in their lives.

Think beyond just colours when imagining stepping out in your perfect statement coat. Think about textures, embellishments, print and length. Imagine a patent red belted trench, or a fringed and tasselled floor length overcoat. Play on the popularity of maximalism by adding in extra stand-out pieces - think silver boots with a rainbow fur coat, or a clash a floral printed skirt with a tweed overcoat.

Those fabulous, almost-novelty-oversized coats are also fantastic for creating a second impression of an outfit.

In the words of Diane Von Furstenberg, she describes the ooh la la moment when you reveal an a completely different outfit just by the removal of a coat. “You have a very tight dress, and you wear a big coat over it. So you get to the rendezvous, and you say ‘Okay, I’ll go for it,’ and you take the coat off and it’s fabulous dress underneath.” Ooze sultry vibes here by wearing your red faux-fur coat on a chilly winter’s evening dinner, and wait for the opportune moment to reveal your ultimate little black dress underneath. Now, don’t tell me winter layering can’t be sexy.
