Let's Talk About Sequins

Sequins Story.jpg

In a fashionable and optimistic leap,

designers have been opting for embellishment up to the ears, looking to the youthful joy of sequins. What woman doesn’t remember being trussed up in at least one sequined tutu at some point in their childhood?

It’s this childlike stubborn optimism that has led to the returning popularity in anything glittery, and not just appearing in a moment of embellishment, but in all-out decoration from head to toe. It’s often that fashion will find ways to resist and reflect the state of the outside world, which, at the moment, feels a very dangerous place. If the ongoing news about the situation with North Korea isn’t enough to make us worry, there’s also the persistent fear of Trump painting the free world into a corner with his incessant and inflammatory commentary. Not to mention ongoing terror attacks and multiple refugee crises - it’s fair to say it feels like the world has been in the most precarious place in recent memory.

So, in typical fashion-industry move, we instead choose to sparkle with a healthy positive outlook that’s made tangible in Saint Laurent’s knee high glitter boots, Tom Ford’s sparkling knickers, and Halpern’s impressive head to toe glitter. And the sparkles aren’t relegated to after five, either - instead you’ll find them in bold moments in high daylight on the street.

So how to? Sequins are - I promise - quite easy to approach, and a fantastic starting point is a sequin, mid-length skirt.

They love texture, so pair your sequin skirt with a chunky oversized knit for the cooler months, or a crisp white shirt for a summer take. In a nod to the maximalism trend that’s slowly been encroaching on our wardrobes, include a statement accessory to keep things interesting; think about bold hoop earrings, colourful handbags, or a standout shoe. Or for ultimate, too-busy-to-care New Yorker style, pair a sequin skirt with a slogan tee and roughed up sneakers.

More certainly is more this season, and with all this daytime glitter, it seems fashion couldn’t be happier about it.
