Heavens Above, The Star Trend Persists!
It’s true, everyone. The star-spattered and sparkling celestial trend that shone in 2016, glittered in 2017, is enduring well into 2018. Originally brought into the spotlight by Alexander Mcqueen and Valentino with their shimmering embellished gowns way back in 2015, celestial fashion has hopped and skipped from runway to street style in various reinventions for the last few years. From Dior’s Haute Couture S/S 2017 show, featuring star-shaped tear drops on models’ cheeks, to Vetements’ Bowie-inspired star boots, the trend has been metamorphosing in a plethora of designer interpretations.
Just when we thought the twinkling might be dimming, Dolce & Gabbana sent supermodel Romee Strijd down the runway dripping in sequins, crowned in a halo of stars. Not that you can forget about Lana Del Rey doing something quite similar last year, showing up to the 2017 Grammys in a star embellished dress and star studded crown, reminiscent of 20s costume glamour.
The trend has also been interpreted through in a haze of western nostalgia by Byron Bay label Spell Boutique, in their “Celestial Campaign”, featuring star embellished jackets, boots and prairie dresses.
It’s the trend’s constant reinvention that has made it so popular, and now, it’s no longer just about wearing a star printed dress. Take on the trend in different approaches, and opt for sky-inspired colours, such as navy, inky-blue, or the washed-out lavender hues of twilight. Don’t forget silver — nothing says cosmos more than the shimmer of silver metallics.
Go for embellishment with star-motif jewellery, and make it modern by layering fine gold pieces and loading your lobes with multiple earrings. Or, take a tongue in cheek approach by adopting the star motif in the loudest way possible — a great piece to start with are star embellished shoes. Finally, let’s not forget about the power of many, many sequins.
However you want to make the trend work for your wardrobe, one thing’s for certain: fashion’s obsession with the skies above aren’t going anywhere any time soon.
